Weekly Handicap Sleeper Notes: 13th, 14th & 15th September

Time for the next set of Handicap Sleeper Notes from last weekend’s racing action…

Ten more horses for you to slide into your notebooks or trackers, as we start to reach the climax of the 2024 Flat season…

And there’s also news on the free NTF Trainer Angles from last weekend at the bottom of the post…

First though, here’s those Handicap Sleepers…

Weekly Handicap Sleeper Notes 13th, 14th & 15th September

.

📆 Friday 13th September

⭕ 555 Doncaster – 5f Class 4 Handicap

Race Note: There was a definite draw/track bias at play at this Doncaster meeting on the straight track, with 16 of the 21 races run on the straight track being won by a horse drawn in the top-half of the draw… breaking the draw into quarters, only 1 winner broke from Q1 of the draw and 10 of the winners broke from Q4… so definite advantage for those in Q3 & Q4 (slightly more of an advantage to Q4) and very much a negative for those drawn in Q1…

🏇 3rd – WATER OF LEITH

Broke from stall 5 here (once non-runners were accounted for) and this was a big effort considering the negative against those drawn low, highlighted here by the 1st, 2nd & 4th breaking from stalls 14, 13 & 12 (again, N/R’s taken into account)… Jim Goldie’s 6yo has been posting solid efforts most of this season and is still on a competitive mark… running here off OR 66, 8lbs below his highest winning mark and 25lbs below his peak rating… and he can consider himself a touch ‘unlucky’ to be drawn on the wrong side here… he’s worth looking out for under the following PC… (since with J Goldie) C3 or less (<12k) | Good+ (or AW) | Aug-Dec | OR <83 = 7/13, 1p – all 7 career wins since with J Goldie

**

⭕ 415 Sandown – 7f Class 3 Handicap

🏇 5th – KOY KOY

It’s taken a few runs to get him back down to a winning mark again, but he is now back on a mark where he can be competitive and that showed here, only fading out of things in the final 100-yards, with the wide draw (stall 9 of 9) probably causing him to use up too much petrol in the early stages as he made his way to the head of the pack… there was, however, enough in the run to suggest he’s worth keeping on the radar over the next few weeks, especially when you consider that he’s 2/6, 2p in the month of September, and he’d be worth consideration if he meets with his PC… OR 93 or less | 7f-1m0.5f | July-Sept | DSLR 42 or less = 51112 (3/5, 1p – all 3 career wins)

**

⭕ 320 Chester – 6f Class 5 Handicap

🏇 7th – OSO RAPIDO

Generally struggles to land a blow in races worth 7k+ to the winner… now 0/21, 1p in such races… and Chester never been the happiest of hunting grounds for him… now 0/5, 0p at track… so easy to excuse this 3.4L 7th of 11… he’s handicapped to be winning at present… running here off OR 68, 14lbs below his last and highest winning mark… and he’s worth looking out for over the coming weeks for when meeting with his PC… (Since with Murray/Fell) C4 or less Hcps (worth 7k or less) | July-Nov | OR <82 | DSLR <31 = 6/17, 6p – all 6 wins with Fell/Murray...

**

⭕ 505 Chester – 7f Class 4 Handicap

🏇 6th – MASTER ZOFFANY

The front 2 in this ‘made all’ and ‘chased leader’ and it was hard for those coming off the pace to land a blow… this 6yo was help up from the off and was also inconvenienced by the Heavy ground (he’s 0/9 on Soft or Heavy) so it was unlikely to be a race he was going to make any impact in… he’s well-handicapped at present on OR 79, 7lbs below his last and highest win mark… and he’s worth looking out for under the following… Handicaps | OR 86 or less | G/S or quicker (or AW) | fields of 12 or less | DSLR 42 or less = 03071151111 (6/11, 1p – all 6 career wins)

**

⭕ 635 Salisbury – 6f Class 4 Handicap

🏇 3rd – HEIRARCHY

A solid effort from the 5yo, under what were his Prime Conditions, but his hold-up style played against him in this race, with the two that finished ahead of him both up on the pace from the off… so with that in mind I’d be marking up this effort a little on the bare form… he’s handicapped to be winning at present off OR 74 and it’s worth looking out for him getting his PC in the coming weeks… OR 80 or less | Aug-Oct | fields of 10 or less = 3111 (3/4, 1p – all 3 career wins)

📆 Saturday 14th September

⭕ 225 Doncaster – 5.5f Class 2 Handicap

🏇 8th – SILKY WILKIE

Stall 1 was always going to be an extremely tough spot to be breaking from as not only was there a strong bias toward the top-half of the draw at this particular meeting, but this race itself has proven a tricky one to be winning from the very low numbers, with only 2 of the last 27 winners breaking from the lowest 4 stalls (and none from stall 1)… with that in mind this 8th of 22 (from stall 1) is likely worth marking up a good bit on the bare form… he did have his PC to shoot for here… OR 99 or less | DSLR 28 or less | Jan-Sept | Straight or RH track = 6/21, 7p – all 6 career wins (can be loose on Hcp ceiling as placed off as high as 107)… and he’s running better than the bare finishing positions of his last 2 starts would suggest…

🏇 14th – VINTAGE CLARETS

Had a decent stall to break from (20) but ultimately his fuel reserves just bottom out extremely quickly once they reach past the 5f marker (this race was 5.5f)… he’s now 0/12, 1p over further than 5f so he was always likely to struggle here and his 7L 11th of 22 is easily forgiven… he’s handicapped to be winning right now… ran here off OR 90, his last and highest win mark is OR 94… and he’s worth keeping in mind for meeting with his PC in coming starts… OR 94 or less | 5f | NOT Seasonal debut = 7/14, 2p – all 7 career wins…  he’s also 3/12, 3p in Sept to Oct so he’s more than capable of finding his way to the winners enclosure at this stage of the year…

**

⭕ 525 Doncaster – 1m Class 2 Handicap

🏇 7th – RHYTHM MASTER

Up against it from his stall 4 berth over the straight Donny mile and he never realistically looked a player at any stage… he’s extremely well-handicapped on his best form right now, running here off OR 93, 7lbs below his last and highest win mark and 17lbs below his peak rating… 1-mile trips possibly aren’t totally what he wants, and I’d have his PC somewhere around the following… OR 100 or less | straight 6f or 7f = 5131 (2/4, 1p – both career wins)

**

⭕ 410 Musselburgh – 1m Class 6 Handicap

🏇 4th – ANNANDALE

Jim Goldie is yet to get a win into this one, with the gelding now 0/16, 0p for Goldie (horse had a spell with Ian Jardine in the middle of his time at the Goldie yard) but he’s on his lowest handicap mark now – OR 57 – and there was some promise with this 4th of 8 (beaten only 1.9L come the line)… he wouldn’t be one to stick with for overly long, but he’s possibly worth looking out for when meeting with the following PC… 1m-1m6f | Flat or Slightly Und tracks (or AW) | race worth <9k | fields of <12 | carrying 9-06 = 42112113 (4/8, 3p)… he’s maybe just one who needs very specific PC before being able to land himself in the winners enclosure…

📆 Sunday 15th September

⭕ 530 Bath – 1m Class 5 Handicap

🏇 3rd – CIOTOG

The 6yo is a horse that needs produced even later than he was here and the move to the front too soon is likely what cost him the win… he’s handicapped to be winning at present, running here off OR 58, 12lbs below his last and highest winning mark… and he’s worth looking out for under his PC of… OR 70 or less | C5 or less Hcps over 1m – 1m0.5f in Aug-Oct | Flat tracks (or A/W) | NO Headgear | DSLR 25 or less = 32112201 (3/8, 4p – all 3 career wins)… with all his wins coming during the August to September period (although has finished second in 2 of his 5 October starts, so happy to extend his prime months until then)…

Shorthand explanations…

PC = Prime Conditions

DSLR = Days Since Last Run

OR = Official Rating

Hcps – Handicaps

LTO – Last Time Out

CP’s – Cheek-Pieces

Yeah some decent Handicap Sleeper winners over the past few weeks, always good to see 😎

Glad you’ve been following them 👍

      Ben (NTF)

  1. Thanks Ben, I look forward to receiving the handicap sleepers and adding them to my tracker. I enjoy the comments relating to each horse and also the rationale behind it relating to the ground or draw bias. Long may it continue. Regards Malcolm.
